Wait, wait, do you mean we never thought that all actors are poofers or whores? Mr. Setoodeh, your conclusions regarding gay and lesbian actors being unable to act “straight” is as confusing as your expectations that Jonathan Groff should be a convincing straight guy on Glee. Aren’t farces a huge part of theater?
[because it is normal for high school students to burst into song in the middle of dance practice, moreso little-respected hit Total Eclipse of the Heart by Bonnie Tyler]
Speaking of which—as a theater critic, I thought suspending your disbelief would be second nature or more importantly, if the switch didn’t hold, you’d recognize that it may be a flaw on the part of the actor, the director, the script or even the critic. But following that up by looking for gay and lesbian thespians whose portrayals of certain characters left you cold will lead you to exactly that—a list of actors whose performance didn’t do it for you. Like a conspiracy freak seeing the long arm of the Cold War in a piece of toast that resembles President Obama. So I don’t think you are homophobic, but you may need to save the hasty judgement for Hollywood infiltrating Broadway. Though Aaron Sorkin does have a great point about how our obsession with the minutiae of celebrity lives can interfere with actual talent. So what do you think?
